First-ever fossilised ancient chromosomes discovered in 52,000-year-old woolly mammoth skin

Image
In a first of its kind, fossil chromosomes have been discovered in a piece of woolly mammoth skin that was excavated from the Siberian permafrost, according to a recent study. The 52,000-year-old remains were discovered in 2018 close to the northeastern Siberian settlement of Belaya Gora. The chromosomes, which are small thread-like structures that contain genetic material, or DNA, were preserved in perfect detail by the cold temperatures in this area. Although samples of ancient DNA have been discovered previously, they are usually very fragmented and only contain a few hundred letters of genetic code. Millions of chromosomes can be found in fossils, providing a significantly more comprehensive image of an animal's genetic makeup. Erez Lieberman Aiden, a professor of molecular and human genetics at the Baylor College of Medicine and co-corresponding author of the study published on Thursday in the journal Cell, stated, "Fossil chromosomes have never been found before."

Environmental Sustainability and Public Health

Today, the Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste Management and Partnership (USAID SELARAS) was officially launched by the Indonesian government and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Waste management presents serious health and environmental problems, including plastic pollution of the oceans and other rivers, therefore both Indonesia and the US have a stake in finding solutions. Enhancing the quality of life for residents, reducing environmental harm, and promoting recycling will all help create a more sustainable future through better solid waste management and higher recycling rates. With the goal of reducing land-based sources of ocean plastic pollution and methane—a strong greenhouse gas—USAID SELARAS is a five-year programme with a maximum funding of $24.7 million. It does this by encouraging sustainable and integrated solid waste management. Eighteen cities and districts in the provinces of North Sumatra, Banten, Central Java, East Java, East Kalim

Victoza: An Ozempic-like Generic GLP-1 Medicine Now Accessible Gambar

The first-ever generic GLP-1 medication to be made available in the US, Victoza (liraglutide), was recently introduced by Teva Pharmaceuticals. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1s or GLP-1 RAs, are a family of incretin medications used to treat obesity and diabetes by acting as the body's natural hormone replacements. In this class, other popular medications include tirzepatide (marketed as Mounjaro and Zepbound) and semaglutide (marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy). The latter stimulates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, earning it the moniker "dual agonistTrusted Source." Some patients have lost up to 25% of their body weight thanks to the medications, which have shown to be incredibly beneficial, especially for weight lossTrusted Source. Numerous other positive effects, such as decreasing A1C and enhancing cardiovascular outcomes, have also been demonstrated. But occasionally, the medications' popularity has gotten out of hand, creating problems with th

Namibian huge fossil resembling a salamander with fangs and a skull shaped like a toilet seat

Scientists claim that the 2.5-meter-long creature existed 280 million years ago as an apex predator, before the time of the dinosaurs. Namibian fossil hunters have found a massive 280-meter-old salamander-like creature that lived before the dinosaur era and was an apex predator. The creature, named Gaiasia jennyae, was roughly 2.5 metres long, with a head shaped like a toilet seat and menacing interlocking fangs. It lurked in lakes and chilly swamps, mouth agape, ready to snap its strong jaws shut on any unsuspecting victim that dared swim by. Prof. Claudia Marsicano of the University of Buenos Aires, who discovered the fossil alongside colleagues, described their discovery as "really shocking" when they saw the massive specimen "just lying on the outcrop as a giant concretion." "As soon as I saw it, I realised it was something entirely different. We were all giddy with anticipation. Gaiasia would have been one of the biggest land predators at the time and th
