At IAF 2024, Indonesia Secures US$94.1 Million in Health Sector Investment Deal

Bali, Indonesia - At the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) Joint Leaders Session 2024 and the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF MSP), Indonesia successfully negotiated an investment deal in the health sector. The entire amount was $94.1 million USD.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was used to sign this deal between Indonesia and several African nations, including Tanzania, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia.

On Monday, February 9, 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali, this was disclosed by Dewi Justicia Meidiwaty, the Director for African Affairs of the Directorate General of Asian, Pacific, and African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to her, this relationship also encompassed PT Biofarma, Biofarma Group, Dexa Medica, Triton, and PT Pertiwi Agung (Mensa Group), among other prominent Indonesian enterprises.

Through PT Bio Farma (Persero), Zimbabwe and Ghana have forged strategic alliances with Indonesia. An agreement was made in Zimbabwe between Biofarma and Natpharm Zimbabwe on the marketing, distribution, and registration of pharmaceutical products.

In the meanwhile, Biofarma and Atlantic Life Sciences will transfer technology to Ghana in order to train workers in Bandung and ship large quantities of API.

Additionally, Indonesia is extending its partnership with Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda through the Biofarma Group. They and the Kenya Biovax Institute signed a master agreement in Kenya for the transfer of technology.

The Biofarma Group has worked with the Nigerian government to procure Td and measles vaccinations, as well as to transfer technology to the BVNL in Nigeria to produce vaccines. A sales agreement for the marketing of pharmaceutical items has been inked in Uganda, and sales are expected to begin in 2026 or 2027.

Furthermore, in 2023, PT Dexa Medica plans to export pharmaceutical items for the first time to Tanzania, with an estimated export value of US$2.5–3 million over the following three years. Conversely, PT Triton Manufactures purchases syringes for the South African market. Concurrently, an agreement was successfully signed with PT Pertiwi Agung (Mensa Group) to buy instant energy drinks in Namibia.

The Bandung Spirit, which has emphasised solidarity and cooperation between Asian and African nations since the Asian-African Conference in 1955, served as the foundation for this cooperation. In keeping with this, Indonesia and African nations keep fortifying their bilateral ties in a number of other areas that are advantageous to both parties, in addition to the health sector.
