WZTV, Franklin, Tennessee — Over the past few days, there have been numerous power outages in the Franklin area. Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE) has determined that these outages are the result of a reptile invasion.

MTE reports that throughout the past ten days, there have been four outages at one of its substations as a result of snake intrusions.

In essence, the snakes have scaled the steel framework to get to electrical connections or equipment. When they do so, they ground the circuit and bridge between the energised equipment, tripping the breakers and resulting in an outage, according to a statement from MTE spokesperson Larry Rose.

Rose continued, comparing this to a breaker that trips in a house breaker box. Every time this occurs, MTE sends a crew to the substation to reset the tripped breaker and retrieve the snake's carcass. Usually, the procedure takes less than an hour.

According to the power company, they have tried three different snake repellents on the substation's ground but they haven't worked.
