Prince William, the son of King Charles, has been given a prominent position with the Army Air Corps.
The King remarked, "The great thing is he's a very good pilot indeed."
It is not often that the King and the Prince of Wales participate in the same event; this participation has been a symbolic passing of the baton.
Thirty-two years ago, the King assumed command of the Army Air Corps as colonel-in-chief. His eldest son, Prince William, is now in his place.
The King, who is still receiving cancer treatment himself, talked to a veteran who had received chemotherapy for testicular cancer at the Hampshire event, and it seemed like they talked about losing taste.
After flying in by helicopter, the King visited Prince William at the Army Aviation Centre to formally transfer this military title.
The King described the occasion as "tinged with great sadness after 32 years of knowing you all" in an impromptu speech.
After expressing his "immense admiration" for the Army Air Corps' efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, he backed his oldest son and heir.
"I do hope you'll go from strength to strength in the future with the Prince of Wales as your new colonel-in-chief. The great thing is he's a very good pilot indeed. So that's encouraging," the monarch remarked.
After serving three years at RAF Valley on Anglesey, Prince William flew search and rescue missions with the RAF.
At the Army Flying Museum at the corps' Middle Wallop base, the King gave his speech in front of an Apache helicopter that was on display.
However, he made no mention of his younger son, Prince Harry, who flew Apaches during his two tours of service in Afghanistan.
When Prince Harry visited the UK last week, there was likewise no meeting with the King; according to Prince Harry's spokeswoman, the King had an excessively busy schedule.
Following that, Prince Harry and his spouse Meghan travelled to Nigeria for a series of charity engagements and his Invictus Games project.
Following the King's departure from the handover ceremony, Prince William proceeded to his first official duty as a new officer, seeing training and receiving an update on the Army Air Corps' current operations.
