RIYADH: In an effort to preserve cultural legacy, the Cultural Heritage Administration of the Chinese province of Henan and the Royal Commission for AlUla have formed a strategic alliance.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the signing supports RCU's objectives to expand its international network within the context of the Saudi-Chinese collaboration.

The agreement is in line with the "AlUla, Wonder of Arabia" exhibition, which is on view through April 11 at Beijing's Palace Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Featuring multiple parts, displays, archaeological artefacts, and heritage objects from historical places in AlUla, the festival has drawn over 250,000 visitors thus far.

With an emphasis on archaeology, protecting cultural assets and museums, research collaboration, talent development, tourism, and other cultural exchanges, the alliance expands knowledge and pooled resources.

It also entails creating a technologically advanced archaeological laboratory, carrying out excavations, conducting studies, and cultivating relationships between historical sites in Henan and AlUla.

The agreement also includes using museum technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality, participating in exhibitions and events, and putting collaborative exchange programmes into action.

AlUla is one of the founding members of the Silk Road Cities International Tourism Alliance, which promotes connectivity and cultural collaboration between China and Saudi Arabia.

The alliance seeks to establish the groundwork for sustained collaboration and knowledge sharing between cities of major tourist, historical, and cultural significance both inside and outside of China.

AlUla will take part in international conferences, delegations, and events, together with 58 other founder cities from 26 different countries, to promote tourism and sustainable development in the northwest of the Arabian Peninsula and among the alliance's other member towns.

According to the SPA report, AlUla governorate and Henan province are attempting to preserve their cultural legacy because of their lengthy history as crossroads of civilizations. With over 200,000 years of history, numerous civilizations have called AlUla home. Meanwhile, Henan, home to 100 million people, is China's third-largest province. Five of the six archaeological projects on the beginnings of Chinese civilization are also housed there.
