JAKARTA: Indonesian medical professionals on a rescue mission in Rafah report seeing the greatest suffering scenes of their lives and are astounded by the scope of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Last week, a group of eleven Indonesian physicians and surgical nurses, led by the World Health Organization, arrived in Gaza as part of an emergency deployment coordinated by the Jakarta-based Medical Emergency Rescue Committee.

In Rafah, a city on the southern tip of the Gaza Strip where over a million Palestinians have sought safety and Israel's lethal bombardment have increased, they are currently employed at several health facilities.

They are undoubtedly taken aback. The chairman of MER-C's executive committee, Sarbini Abdul Murad, told Arab News on Thursday that "these are medics who usually work in ordinary settings and are suddenly thrown into such heartbreaking scenes."

Medical volunteers in Gaza observe not just Israeli attacks resulting in death and injuries, but also starvation.

"People witness the extent of fighting for food, or they witness children fighting over leftovers to feed their families," Murad stated. "Being witnesses to these scenes that they will never be able to forget in their lives is slicing open their consciences."

Since October, Israeli attacks have resulted in approximately 32,500 Palestinian deaths and 74,000 injuries. Additionally, over a million people in Gaza are at risk of starvation as a result of Israel's continued blockade of the besieged territory.

The Indonesian medical team is a part of a wider international emergency medical deployment that is coordinated by the World Health Organization. It comprises orthopedic doctors and surgical nurses to assist Israeli attack victims wounded by bullets, missile strikes, and bombings.

The scarcity of medical supplies and surgical equipment in the besieged area has been a challenge for them.

"The number of victims and the insufficiency of doctors and health services available have left the medical sector in Gaza severely overwhelmed," stated Murad.

"They treat war victims who have severe burn injuries, and many of them also require amputations."

A UN Security Council resolution on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip throughout Ramadan; yet, Israel has persisted in bombing the Gaza Strip and obstructing vital humanitarian deliveries.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese stated that there are good reasons to think Israel is committing genocide in Gaza one day after the council voted a resolution calling for a ceasefire.
