Following a cancer diagnosis, King Charles III is receiving treatment in London

A week after the 75-year-old British monarch left the hospital following a different operation for an enlarged prostate, the shocking news was made.

What we know is as follows:How did the cancer get discovered?

Beginning on January 17, when Buckingham Palace declared that the King will be admitted to the hospital for a “corrective procedure” to treat a benign enlarged prostate, Charles' recent health issues began.

After exhibiting symptoms and undergoing medical examination at his Birkhall home in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he was diagnosed

After spending three nights in the luxury hospital next to Regent's Park, he was released from the London Clinic on January 29 and was earlier reported to be "doing well." He was freed a few hours after Catherine, Princess of Wales, had recovered from her successful stomach surgery and departed the same hospital where she had been recovering.

Last Monday, King Charles and Queen Camilla left a hospital in London.

But, the palace said on Monday that while the King was receiving that therapy, another matter of concern was discovered, and further testing revealed "a form of cancer."

At this point, more information is not anticipated. The precise type of cancer has not been disclosed. CNN was informed by a royal source that it was not prostate cancer, though the source did not elaborate.

Rarely are the specific medical issues of members of the royal family made public. From the palace's standpoint, even if they work for the government, they have a right to some degree of medical privacy. That was the situation with the initial prostate enlargement diagnosis. Charles, however, made the decision to disclose his diagnosis because he wished to inspire other men who might be having symptoms to get medical attention.

When a condition may have an impact on public duties, the situation changes. At that point, the palace needs to explain what's happening, which is why they released a statement on Monday night.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated on Tuesday that the King's cancer diagnosis was "caught early." Sunak remarked, "Thankfully, this has been caught early and now everyone will be wishing him that he gets the treatment that that he needs and makes a full recovery," in what seemed to be spontaneous statements during a radio interview with the BBC.

What is the state of affairs with King Charles?

For the first time since leaving the hospital on Sunday, King Charles was sighted. He seemed happy and upbeat, waving to onlookers as he and Queen Camilla travelled to St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk, for a Sunday morning church service.

Now that he is back in London, he is starting outpatient care.

The King will continue with state business and formal paperwork, but he is delaying his public appearances while receiving treatment at the physicians' instruction, according to the palace.

It said, "He looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible and remains wholly positive about his treatment."

That implies that in order for him to continue going through state records at home, he will probably continue receiving his red boxes containing government paperwork every day. CNN is aware that, should his doctors urge him to limit face-to-face interactions, alternate plans will be devised and that the King is expected to carry on with his weekly meeting with the prime minister.

It is also thought that he would remain accessible for state obligations, such as sessions of the Privy Council. The specifics of how that would happen, meanwhile, are still being worked out.

Now, who leads the family?

On Wednesday, Prince William will make his public debut for the first time since his wife Catherine's surgery last month. Although the purpose of her surgery is unknown, a royal source informed CNN on January 17 that the 42-year-old had a non-cancerous ailment.

William's decision to resume some royal engagements was announced just a few hours before the King was diagnosed with cancer. William and his father have regular communication, a person close to the Prince of Wales has revealed.

Kensington Palace announced earlier on Monday that Prince William will be attending a London Air Ambulance organisation banquet, where he will meet with crew members, supporters, and former patients of the organisation.

At their Windsor residence, the Prince of Wales had taken time off to assist his family while his wife completed her recuperation. The princess is anticipated to require several months of recuperation, since Kensington Palace had already stated that it was doubtful that she would return to public life until after Easter. The princess's return to her formal activities will depend on medical advice closer to the moment, a royal source told CNN last week.

In recent weeks, Queen Camilla has been performing a full schedule of public responsibilities, and this is anticipated to continue. While this is going on, the family's other working members are continuing their public appearances, and CNN has learned that they may take on some extra responsibilities in Charles' place if necessary.

The quantity of "working royals" who interact with the public has decreased recently as "the Firm" attempted to change its image to reflect the times. The King only assigns working royals to engagements; they divided the 2,710 visits and events from the previous year among themselves.

The original plan called for the membership of that group to be made up of the following 14 family members: Prince Andrew, Princess Anne, King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Waleses, the Sussexes, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Duke and Duchess of Kent. That is, until Andrew was compelled to resign due to his association with the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following the decision made by Prince Harry and Meghan to step down. Currently, eleven members of the clan—more than half of them are older than 70—perform royal obligations.

The office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has stated that Harry, who has communicated with his father since his cancer diagnosis, will be visiting the UK in the coming days. After resigning from his position as a royal in 2020, the duke is travelling from California to see the King, whom he is believed to have not seen since the coronation in May.

What would happen if the King's illness prevents him from working?

Even while the palace is sending out encouraging signals, there are safeguards in place under the constitution in case the King is momentarily unable to perform his official duties. "Councillors of state" may be called upon to act in his place in that situation.

Through the process of a "letters patent," two counsellors can be designated to serve on behalf of the monarch and maintain the smooth operation of the state. They wouldn't be able to carry out some of the most crucial constitutional duties, including selecting a prime minister, but they would be allowed to sign documents, go to Privy Council meetings, and welcome new ambassadors. CNN is aware that no counsellors are currently scheduled to be appointed.

Queen Camilla, Princes William, Harry, and Andrew, as well as Princess Beatrice, are among the royals qualified to take over. The King included his siblings, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, to this group of relatives in 2022. The Dukes of Sussex and York are no longer working royals, therefore it is doubtful that they would be asked to step up if this option were implemented over the next few weeks or months.

The King's powers may be revoked and taken over by a regent if he is totally incapable of fulfilling his constitutional obligations and the state is no longer able to operate as intended. Prince William would be the next in line for the throne under the Regency Act of 1937.

Medical proof that the Sovereign "is for some specific cause not available for the performance of those functions" or "is by reason of infirmity of mind or body incapable for the time being of performing the royal functions" is required in order for that to occur.

A majority vote of the four-person panel is required to find the evidence satisfactory. The Lord Chief Justice of England, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Master of the Rolls, and the Queen make up that panel. They would have to put their decision in writing and indicate whether or not the King is prepared to take up his duties again. Prince William would take his place in the interim.

What is the succession plan in place right now?

The line of succession has not altered despite recent variations in the number of royals in active service.

Prince William, the eldest son of the King, is the heir apparent to the British monarchy. Prince George, age ten, is followed by Princess Charlotte, age eight, and Prince Louis, age five.
