RIYADH: For a second consecutive year, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language has prepared a special schedule of events, in conjunction with the Organization of Islamic conjunction, as part of the current celebrations for World Arabic Language Day.

Under the patronage of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture and Chair of the Academy's Board of Trustees, the activities are scheduled for January 14. According to the Saudi Press Agency, there will be an international celebration at the UN headquarters in New York in addition to the events taking place at the OIC general secretariat offices in Jeddah.

The secretary-general of the OIC, Hissein Brahim Taha, will formally inaugurate the festivities. Other distinguished visitors will include the academy's secretary-general, Abdullah Al-Washami; Saudi Arabia's permanent envoy to the OIC, Saleh Al-Suhaibani; Azerbaijan's ambassador to the Kingdom, Shaheen Abdullayev; and additional permanent representatives and ambassadors from OIC member states.

The program is part of the wider celebrations for World Arabic Language Day, which was founded by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2010 and has been observed on Dec. 18 each year since 2012. That day was selected to commemorate the UN's adoption of Arabic as its sixth official language in 1973. The event in 2023 had "Arabic: The Language of Poetry and Arts" as its topic.

Two primary discussion sessions are part of the academy's events; the first addresses the impact and influence of Arabic poetry, while the second focuses on the Arabic language's place in the arts. The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Research Center For Islamic History, Art and Culture, the academy, and members of the OIC will all be there.

Additionally, poets Mohammed Ibrahim Mohammed Yaqoub from Saudi Arabia, Bahar Al-Din Abdullah from Sudan, and Abdullah Mohammed Ubaid from Yemen will read passages from Islamic poetry during a session that will be followed by discussions of the poems.

Furthermore, a selection of poems from the early Islamic era and beyond will be presented, together with verses from the "Ten Mu'allaqat," a collection of seven lengthy poems, in an Arabic poetry exhibition. Additionally, there will be chances to learn about the academy's work, initiatives, programs, and other activities.
