 On Wednesday, January 24, 2024

Indonesia's Jakarta On Tuesday, 23/1, Tanzania's January Makamba, Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, paid a visit to Indonesia's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. The bilateral meeting is the first following Makamba's appointment on January 1, 2023, as Tanzania's Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.

The main topic of discussion during the meeting was getting ready for H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the president of Tanzania, who will be visiting Indonesia on January 24-26, 2024. President Samia will be accompanied on this tour by 131 business delegates representing various industries and three ministers. On January 25, 2024, at Hotel Mulia, these corporate representatives will take part in the Tanzania-Indonesia corporate and Investment Forum. Working together with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry produced this forum.

The discussion between Tanzania's Foreign Minister and Indonesia's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs covered a number of possible areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, energy, minerals, oil and gas, the blue economy, and development cooperation. To provide tangible deliverables for President Samia's visit, all sides decided to finalize a number of agreement documents.

Specifically, the Indonesian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs conveyed gratitude to the Tanzanian government for approving Pertamina's purchase of Wentworth Resources through Maurel & Prom (M&P). This indicates a great level of trust in Indonesia. The government, through Pertamina, has started a capacity-building program for TPDC employees with 100 scholarships as a reciprocal gesture and a commitment to Indonesia's cooperation with Tanzania. This is the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed during President Joko Widodo's visit five months ago, the Vice Minister stated.

In retaliation for President Joko Widodo's state visit to Tanzania in August of last year, President Samia is making his first formal visit to Indonesia. "President Joko Widodo's historic trip to Africa (Tanzania) in August of last year effectively created a number of avenues for more trade, investment, and oil and gas cooperation. Foreign Minister Makamba said, "We need to maintain this momentum, which is why President Samia's visit back to Indonesia is essential for us to maintain the future cooperation between the two countries."
