As the number of refugees has surpassed the capacity of the current shelters, we are currently looking for a method to relocate them.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - As more Rohingya people seek safety in Indonesia, the government is actively searching for a new location, according to Mahfud MD, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.

He stated, "We are currently finding a way to find another location for the refugees, given that their number has exceeded the capacity of the existing shelters," following a discussion on the subject of Rohingya migrants on Wednesday at his Jakarta office.

He claimed that he has requested that Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian discuss the relocation of the refugees with the regional leadership coordination forums of the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and Riau.

Mahfud reported at the conference that a number of parties had offered areas the refugees might use as makeshift shelters. He did, however, note that the administration had not yet chosen a place.

He added that in order to keep the current shelters from getting too full, the administration will shortly decide on a new place for the migrants. He underlined that the government's efforts are motivated only by humanitarianism.

"In principle, we are applying humanitarian diplomacy to deal with the Rohingya refugees issue," he stated.

President Joko Widodo stated earlier on Monday, December 4, 2023, that he has given Mahfud instructions to address the matter of 139 Rohingya refugees who were purportedly left stranded in Sabang city, Aceh, on Saturday, December 2.

"Yes, I have ordered the top security minister to collaborate with regional governments and the UNHCR to deal with the issue," said the president.

In the meantime, the Aceh provincial government has been working with the UNHCR and the federal government to manage the refugees who are currently being housed in different areas of the province.
