Milan is being criticized by Paolo Maldini for having "no real respect for club's identity and history.

In his first interview since being ousted as technical director in the summer, Milan icon Paolo Maldini charged that the team had "no real respect for Milan’s identity and history."

The five-time Champions League champion, whose father, Cesare, and son, Daniel, were players for the team, claimed in an interview with La Repubblica that owner Gerry Cardinale's explanations for sacking him were "a little weak."

"Cardinale informed me and (former sporting director of Milan, Ricky Massara) that we were let go," Maldini remarked. When I questioned him about it, he said that I didn't get along well with (CEO Giorgio) Furlani. "Did I ever call you to complain about him?" I asked. I didn't do it.

The 55-year-old says he didn't really get along with Cardinale, the founder of RedBird Capital, who acquired the team after winning the 2022 Scudetto. He has been considered for an executive position in the Saudi Pro League.

"I only had one chat with him in a year, but I received four messages." He advised us to have faith in one another. I had faith in him. Everyone knows how that ended.

Between 1984 and 2009, Maldini was a player with Milan, where he won five Champions League titles and seven Serie A titles.

He went back to the club. returned to Milan in 2018 after taking a job offer to take over as the team's head of sporting strategy and development. A year later, he was made technical director.

In his role as technical director, Maldini helped Milan win their first Serie A championship in eleven years in 2021–2022, bringing in young players like as Fikayo Tomori, Rafael Leao, and Theo Hernandez.

At the 2022 Globe Soccer Awards, Maldini and Massara shared the sporting director of the year award, recognizing their hard work.

Maldini commented, "There are limited alternatives to Milan," regarding his future in the league. I would only ever work at a top level for a foreign team and never again for an Italian club. I enjoy creating and winning (projects). Saudi? Who knows? It could be a good concept.
