JAKARTA: On Friday, medical professionals from Indonesia staged a demonstration in Jakarta to urge that the World Health Organization defend Palestinian medical personnel who are treating injured civilians in Israeli attacks and to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

At least a hundred medical professionals from ten medical associations in Indonesia took part in the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee's solidarity demonstration. They hoisted Palestinian flags and banners with the words "Stop Genocide" and shouted "Free Palestine."

Since October, Israeli violence has escalated, resulting in almost 18,600 Palestinian deaths in Gaza. More than 250 Palestinian medical professionals have also died as a result of Israel's ongoing attacks on the besieged enclave's infrastructure, including the Indonesia Hospital in northern Gaza, which was supported by money collected by MER-C.

The Geneva Convention mandates that hospitals, ambulances, and medical personnel be safeguarded, but Israel doesn't see it that way. The chairman of MER-C's executive committee, Sarbini Abdul Murad, addressed the demonstrators and stated, "In Israel's eyes, these are targets to be destroyed."

"For this reason, we're taking this chance to express our concern and unity."

In a united petition, Indonesian medical professionals called for a ceasefire in Gaza and asked that the WHO take action to defend Palestinian medical professionals and assist in the release of Palestinian health workers who have been imprisoned by the Israeli military.

Dentist and Indonesian Dental Association member Gagah Daru Setiawan told Arab News that "the attacks by Zionist Israel on Gaza have not only resulted in a social disaster as many ordinary residents have become victims." The attacks were carried out on Gaza by Zionist Israel.

"We denounce the savagery of Zionist Israel, which slaughters women and children without distinction, demolishes hospitals, and murders medical personnel."

Maryanto, a protester from the Indonesian National Nurses Association, expressed her hope that the World Health Organization will take notice of the Friday march.

He told Arab News, "We are trying to pump up the spirit of life for our fellow health worker friends in Palestine."

"We, the health workers, are taking to the streets with ten medical associations to force the World Health Organization to take meaningful action toward the release of the kidnapped health workers and the implementation of the ceasefire."

Medical professionals in Indonesia are also calling on medical professionals worldwide to support their Palestinian counterparts and make similar demands.

The deputy chairman of the executive committee of the Indonesian Medical Association, Mahesa Paranadipa, stated that "it is absolutely necessary to speak up and demand that the war ends."

"Human values have been eroded by the atrocities committed by the Israeli military... Crimes against humanity will occur more frequently and anywhere if we allow this to continue.
