The wildfire on Mount Rinjani is still growing, and the
climbing path may have to be closed.
(The Jakarta Post) News Desk Sun., November 5, 2023, Jakarta
On Thursday, the wildfire in Mount Rinjani National Park had grown from 30
hectares to over 95 hectares. The national park's chief officer for land and
forest fires, Lalu Santawana, reported that 19 new hot spots had been found on
Thursday. With this, there are now 26 hot spots in all. Tuesday saw the start
of the wildfire in East Lombok's Gomongan forest. It is thought that local
hunters started the original fire, which was exacerbated by the dry conditions
brought on by the protracted dry season.
"Over an area of 30 ha, the fire's coordinates are
08°23'24.28" S 116°30'17.84 "E," according to Dwi Pangestu, the
national park's head of administration.
According to the official, among the vegetation destroyed by
the fire were mountain fir, bakbakkan trees, dried leaves, bushes, and other
kinds of flora. A preliminary assessment from the national park superintendent
states that by Thursday, 55 hectares of the Gomongan forest near Sembalun
village had caught fire. Five hot areas persisted, according to Lalu, and the
fire on the northern slope of Mount Rinjani had not been completely contained.
He said that it would be challenging to put out the flames since they could get
up to five metres in the air. The primary obstacles to putting out the fire are
the mountainous, steep terrain and the scarce water supply. Another factor
contributing to the difficulty extinguishing the fire has been strong winds.
According to drone monitoring, the national park's hot patches are roughly 7
kilometres away from populated areas. The hot spots are located 3.4 km from the
Sembalun Resort hiking route and 7.5 km from the closest settlement, according
to visual observations and digital maps.
Local authorities are thinking of blocking the trekking trail that leads
to Mt. Rinjani via Sembalun because of these circumstances. The Senaru or
Torean hiking paths will be the new destination for hikers who have made
reservations online.
