Israeli tanks surround the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza.

The Health Ministry describes the situation as "catastrophic" at the only remaining medical facility in northern Gaza.

20 November 2023: The Ministry of Health in the war-torn enclave of Gaza reports that Israeli tanks have surrounded the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza after artillery bombardment killed at least 12 Palestinians inside the facility.

The Gaza Health Ministry's spokesperson, Ashraf al-Qudra, told Al Jazeera on Monday that hundreds of people are still stuck in the Indonesian Hospital and that "the situation is catastrophic."

The personnel at the Indonesian hospital is adamant that they will remain to tend to the injured. The facility is home to over 700 individuals, including injured patients and medical personnel, he said.

The Israeli military, which doesn't usually make army moves public, didn't immediately respond.

The Beit Lahiya plant in the northeastern Gaza town was struck by artillery fire, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Health officials in Palestine reported that there were desperate attempts to get civilians out of harm's way.

The hospital's staff refuted reports that any armed extremists were present.

Retno Marsudi, the foreign minister of Indonesia, denounced the acts of Israel and encouraged Tel Aviv's allies to "end its atrocities."

There is no doubt that the attack violates international humanitarian law. She stated in a statement that "all nations, especially those with close ties to Israel, must use all of their influence and capabilities to urge Israel to stop its atrocities."

The World Health Organisation evacuated 31 preterm babies from al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City the day before the facility's construction began. The facility was established in 2016 with support from Indonesian groups.

Since Israeli forces stormed the facility, more than 250 critically ill or injured individuals have been left there.

The major hospital in the territory has been under siege for several days, with 7,000 people inside, and is now being forced to leave at gunpoint.

The "collapse of services" at hospitals in northern Gaza has been documented by the UN humanitarian organisation OCHA as a result of extensive airstrikes, a shortage of fuel, and medical supplies.

The military of Israel asserts Medical officials and Hamas reject claims that the organisation in control of Gaza, Hamas, has constructed underground facilities beneath hospitals for military use.

Medical experts and Hamas refute assertions made by the Israeli military that the Hamas organisation, which controls Gaza, has constructed underground infrastructure beneath hospitals for military use.

Israeli tanks could be seen through the windows, according to Marwan Abdallah, a medical staff member at the Indonesian Hospital.

He stated, "You can see them firing and moving around." Children and women are afraid. The sounds of gunfire and explosions are continuous

According to Abdallah, airstrikes and shelling during the course of the night left the hospital with dozens of dead and wounded.

After more than 1,200 people were killed in a wave of cross-border attacks by Hamas on October 7, most of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities, Israel began its offensive against Gaza.

According to the administration controlled by Hamas, 13,000 people have died as a result of Israeli airstrikes and ground operations in Palestinian territory, many of them being minors.
