Jokowi claims that
the additional quota has reduced the Hajj waiting time by two years.
Jakarta's TEMPO.CO On Sunday, October 22, 2023, President
Joko Widodo (Jokowi) declared that the Saudi Arabian government's 20,000 extra
Hajj quota for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage will shorten the waiting period for
prospective pilgrims by two years.
During the 2023 Santri Day celebration in Surabaya, East
Java, Jokowi shared the outcomes of his one-on-one meeting in Riyadh on Friday,
October 20, 2023, with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed
bin Salman al-Saud.
The occasion was aired on the Presidential Secretariat's
YouTube page. "I conveyed to His Royal Highness that currently in
Indonesia, if people want to perform Hajj, they have to wait for 47
years," he stated.
He said the crown prince was taken aback to hear that
prospective Hajj pilgrims in Indonesia could have to wait up to 47 years.
Jokowi asked for an extra Hajj quota during the conference,
pointing out that Indonesia now has 278 million citizens.
The prime minister then approved Indonesia's request for an
extra 20,000 pilgrims to perform the Hajj the following year.
This is a huge amount of money. As a result, the waiting
period of 47 years can be shortened to 45 years for those that wait. Indeed,
it's still a while off, but at least it's being discussed "jokowi stated.
It was recently reported that Indonesia's pilgrim quota for
the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage was capped at 221 thousand persons, while the quota
for Hajj officers was fixed at 2,200.
Qualified Hajj officers are among the preparations the
Indonesian government has begun to make for the Hajj services in 2024.
